Savannah Holiday Celebrations of Long Ago

At the Davenport House Museum, daily tours between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve will focus on the understated taste of an authentic early 19th century holiday season in Savannah. Tours look at how members of the Davenport household celebrated Christmas and New Year’s when they lived in the home between the years 1820 – 27.

20th Annual Holiday Sights Tour

The elves of Old Town Trolley Tours will delight and entertain on their annual Holiday Sights Tour. Enjoy caroling from the trolley as you pass decorated historic homes and city squares. The tour is offered 31 nights throughout November and December and includes two stops; the historic Isaiah Davenport House and Savannah's Westin Resort with the area's largest gingerbread village. At the Davenport House, you will be transported back to the 1820's to get a glimpse of a typical 19th century family holiday. Just before the evening ends, you will stroll through the areas largest gingerbread village at the festively decorated Westin Savannah Harbor Hotel.

There are up to five tours departing each night every 30 minutes between 6:30pm and 8:30pm. The tour is approximately two hours.

Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight

Glistening by candlelight, the Davenport House Museum welcomes visitors to an event emphasizing the end-of-year celebrations of early 19th century Savannahians, including the Davenport household, who lived in the fine brick home on Columbia Square. Light refreshments, music and skilled interpreters, who show visitors through the home, are among the highlights of the presentation. A demonstration of period dancing will culminate the evening. The performance requires that guests be able to walk up and down stairs and maneuver in the candlelit rooms. There will be no admittance after 8 p.m.

Dates: December 26 - December 30

Admission: $12 adults in advance, $15 at the door; $6 children in advance, $8 at the door. Plus tax.

Maybe you don’t just want to explore City Market, but partake in some holiday activities. If that’s the case, then make your way there for their Christmas for Kids Celebration, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be fun-filled activities, including cookie decorating, ornament making, face painting, a petting zoo, photos with Father Christmas in the Carriage Tours of Savannah Cinderella carriage and a choir performance during this special occasion. "A Christmas Tradition" Musical Variety Show

Date: November 23, 2017 - December 24

If it’s a holiday show you’re looking for then make your way to the famed Savannah Theatre for holiday glitz and glitter. The two-hour variety show, “A Christmas Tradition,” will feature Frosty, dancing reindeer, Santa and his elves, along with an award-winning cast of singers and a live band performing all the classic Christmas favorites.

Boat Parade of Lights

Head to the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa for front row seats to the Boat Parade of Lights. The twinkling parade will feature 35 festively decorated crafts on the Savannah River. Along with the beautiful parade, you will experience a festive tree lighting, Savannah Pipe and Drum Band performance and photos with Santa.

Savannah Harbor Holiday Series

For lights, amazing gingerbread houses, Christmas activities, holiday treats and more, head over to the Westin across the Savannah River for the 16th annual Savannah Harbor Holiday Series. It will not only feature the South’s best Santa Claus, a world famous Gingerbread Village & Competition, but also daily events from local organizations and holiday treats at the “Ice Bar” and “North Pool.”

Christmas on the River

The Savannah Waterfront Association is known for it’s fun festivals on River Street and their Christmas on the River celebration is just that. This holiday celebration features regional arts and craft exhibitors with holiday gifts and stocking stuffers at the Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, with music and local entertainment on the Arbor Stage throughout the weekend leading up to Savannah’s Lighted Parade. Weekend festivities kick off December 1 from 4-10 p.m., with First Friday Fireworks at 9:30 p.m., and December 2 from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. The parade will start on West River Street, travel throughout downtown and end in City Market. Savannah Ballet Theatre Presents "The Nutcracker"

The Savannah Ballet Theatre’s production of The Nutcracker will take center stage at the beautiful Lucas Theatre on December 2. Join the dancers in the lobby for a character meet and greet after the performance.

Tybee Island Christmas Parade

On December 2 visitors can head over to “Savannah’s Beach” at 1 p.m. for the Tybee Island Christmas Parade, where festive floats and spirited parade participants will fill the streets of Tybee Island as they lead Mr. and Mrs. Claus from the 14th Street parking lot, up Tybrisa to Butler Avenue, to the Tybee Gym for photos with Santa and all kinds of other family fun. The Tybee YMCA will also have surprises for all to enjoy at the gym.

9th Annual Tybee Island Lighted Boat Parade

Watch a parade of boats decked in their holiday finery from the comfort of The Crab Shack on Tybee Island.

Davenport House Harvest Lecture Series

December 4: Nancy Carter Crump, culinary historian specializing in 18th century open-hearth cooking, presents Out of the Ashes: Using Early Cookbooks as a Guide to Fireplace Cooking

December 11: Damon Lee Fowler, culinary historians specializing in southern cooking and the taste of the Lowcountry will present Lowcountry Cooking Traditions.
