It's official! The Savannah Convention Center will undergo a major expansion to its facility and is scheduled to break ground this fall. In 2017, the General Assembly approved $3 million in funding to begin designing the expansion, followed by an additional $6.3 million to continue the engineering process. The Convention Center expansion’s estimated construction time is two to three years from groundbreaking.
The expansion will add:
Doubled exhibit hall space to 200,000 square feet
A 57-foot-wide hangar door
A new 40,000-square-foot ballroom
32 customizable break-out rooms
900 parking spaces
Additional outdoor space and a new facility entrance with an all-glass façade
A separate hotel property containing between 350 and 400 guest rooms is also planned in the changes to Hutchinson Island, but will be financed privately.
President of Visit Savannah Joseph Marinelli says the expansion was sorely needed and a long time coming. “The expansion of the Savannah Convention Center gives meeting and convention planners an amazing, new facility to bring their events and attendees. Visit Savannah has been hearing a need for more meeting space since the Center opened in 2000. Savannah is a bucket list destination, drives conference registrations and many planners report record attendance when they book in Savannah. The new, expanded center will allow us to go after new, larger business and will be a magnificent addition to Savannah’s Waterfront.”
