Jingle Bells Tour of Laurel Grove Cemetery

Come enjoy refreshments, good cheer & stories while visiting the grounds where the author of the most festive of Christmas themed songs, "Jingle Bells," James L. Pierpont is buried and inside of not the tourist favorite, but the local's favorite cemetery! Called "The Hidden Gem," Laurel Grove feels like a Victorian Christmas scene most days of the year less the snow! It contains the city's most amazing ironwork and its incredibly beautiful, rustic & varied burial vault mausoleums are the highlight of Savannah's ONLY true Victorian cemetery! While seeing songwriter James L. Pierpont's grave is a focus, you'll meet his friends like Girl Scouts' Founder Juliette Gordon Low, Savannah's original hospitality figure Florence "The Waving Girl" Martus, eccentric developer & richest man to ever live in Savannah, Andrew Low, Jewish Nurse Phoebe Pember as well as explore some 1500 Civil War graves that include 7 Generals and so many others! This one time tour conducted by native area historian and professor, Richard Hodges.

Date: December 28

Admission: $25 for adults and $15 for children and teens under 15

Scrimshaw Origami Whale Sculptures

Try out our modern take on Scrimshaw, a form of engraving artwork that used be made by whalers to tell stories of their great adventures. We will work on newly developed special Yupo paper to create our own scrimshaw drawings and finish by using simple origami to fold the image into a “whale” of a story. Event is at the Perry Lane Hotel.

Holiday Evening Tours by Candlelight

Glistening by candlelight, the Davenport House Museum welcomes visitors to an event emphasizing the end-of-year celebrations of early 19th century Savannahians, including the Davenport household, who lived in the fine brick home on Columbia Square. Light refreshments, music and skilled interpreters, who show visitors through the home, are among the highlights of the presentation. A demonstration of period dancing will culminate the evening. The performance requires that guests be able to walk up and down stairs and maneuver in the candlelit rooms. The last group through the house will begin at 8 p.m. Following the last tour will be a dance demonstration at approximately 8:50 p.m.

Dates: December 26-30, 2019
