The Savannah VOICE Festival (SVF) will return to Savannah for its seventh annual festival, themed “Heaven and Earth,” August 3-25, 2019. This year’s celebration of classical voice features more than 25 performances including operas, concerts, food and wine events and masterclasses by over 100 visiting artists from around the world.
Audiences will be delighted with the return of festival favorites, as well as some exciting new productions! The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa will once again be the home of the Festival and the backdrop for many Festival events, along with historic places located around the city.
Perhaps you’re thinking, “Yes, I’d love to, but there are so many wonderful choices and I just can’t see them ALL.” Don’t worry--we’ve got you covered with several suggestions below of “can’t miss” SVF events!
For starters, who doesn’t love free? The FREE Festival favorite concert, “Voices in Sacred Song,” will showcase the brilliance of spiritual music through oratorio and song and ends with the ever-powerful Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. Also FREE is Sherrill Milnes’ popular “Masters in VOICE” master class. A three-time Grammy Award winner who’s performed over 600 times at the Met with the likes of Placido Domingo, Pavarotti and Joan Sutherland, it’s no wonder Sherrill Milnes is acclaimed world-wide as the foremost baritone of his generation, and a true master of the operatic art form.
The Festival will present four operas during its 2nd Savannah Opera season: Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, accompanied by SVF’s composer-in-residence Michael Ching’s commissioned opera “short,” The Birthday Clown, Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites and Portman’s The Little Prince.
If you love 1950s hits and Broadway, you’re going to love SVF’s show, Forever Plaid. This traditional styled Dinner Theatre promises to be another not to be missed event on August 4 and 11 - or just come for the show! The Festival also celebrates the fabulous music of the Broadway stage with Broadway: Heaven on Earth. Presented by extraordinary voices of Festival Artists, audiences will be utterly delighted with this concert spanning 50 years of great musical theatre.
If you want to experience an outrageous evening of opera singers rockin’ out with the Elite Party Band, you’ll have to check out Old Time Rock and Roll: Music of the 70s. This “out of the box,” evening of upbeat music that we all know and love is sure to be a rock ‘n roll winner!
During Old Blue Eyes: Peter Lake in Tribute to Frank Sinatra, you’re invited to take a trip down memory lane with tenor, Peter Lake, while he croons out popular “rat pack” favorites in a concert certain not to disappoint Swoonatra fans!
