Bonaventure: A Historic Cemetery in Art
Dripping in Spanish moss and adorned in vibrant azaleas, it’s easy to see why Bonaventure Cemetery is one of Savannah’s most popular attractions. This hauntingly beautiful cemetery serves as a resting place for the dead as well as a place for artistic inspiration.
Telfair Museums is a big fan of all things Bonaventure, which is why they’ve put together a stunning exhibition at the Jepson Center that includes paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures inspired by or connected to Savannah’s Bonaventure Cemetery. This stunning exhibition is as Savannah as it gets!
Bonaventure: A Historic Cemetery in Art has works by sculptor John Walz, paintings by Hattie Saussy and photographs by Edward Weston and Jack Leigh. Most notably, the exhibition spotlights Sylvia Shaw Judson’s “The Bird Girl,” a bronze sculpture made famous by John Berendt’s bestselling novel “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.”
Bonaventure: A Historic Cemetery in Art is on display at the Jepson Center until September 23.
The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip
The all-American road trip has been an enduring symbol of our country’s culture for quite some time. After World War II, when cars were widely available, photographers journeyed by car through America in order to better understand the country’s post-war culture. It was then that the theme of the American road trip began appearing in literature, music, film and especially photography.
The Open Road is the first exhibition to explore the American road trip as a genre. The exhibition showcases photographs by 19 different artists spanning from the early 1900s to present day.
The exhibition’s works are in chronological order, beginning with Robert Frank’s seminal series “The Americans” (1958), and including such renowned work as Garry Winogrand’s “1964,” Joel Sternfeld’s “American Prospects,” William Eggleston’s “Los Alamos,” and Justine Kurland’s “Highway Kind.”
This exhibition will inspire you to look at your next road trip with a newfound artistic angle. And if you happen to capture a great shot next time you’re on the open road, post it to Instagram with the hashtag #telfairopenroad for a chance to win a special prize!
The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip is on display at the Jepson Center until September 3.
