"Bottle Shock"

Apr 30, 2020

It’s the Tybee Wine Festival and so, we’re offering one of the most popular movies about wine ever!

It’s “Bottle Shock,” a very funny film which revolves around the famous “Judgment of Paris” wine competition of 1976. The contest is largely credited for kickstarting the American wine machine as it involved domestic wines going toe-to-toe with some of the best Old World labels out there.

Plus, it features Bill Pullman and the late and great Alan Rickman and focuses on the cozy, somewhat nostalgic version of the Napa Valley, circa the 1970s.

Back in 1976, the world of wine had mainly just one country on the map, France. Quietly Californians had been making pretty good wines themselves that no one, especially French noticed. Until a British wine critic living in Paris decides to travel Napa to gather California’s best wines and put them up against France’s best wines in a blind tasting. The results have forever changed the wine world.

Although Bottle Shock might not be very accurate, it does include some of the best fly-over shots of Napa Valley you’ll ever see. Your heart will skip like a little kid, especially if you’re drinking a buttery Chardonnay.

Tickets $15 and your movie ticket gets you one complimentary Chardonnay, or the wine of your choice.
