Girls' Night Out: "Sunset Boulevard"

Now – Sep 20, 2018

Billy Wilder's "Sunset Boulevard” is the portrait of a forgotten silent star, living in exile in her grotesque mansion, screening her old films, dreaming of a comeback. But it's also a deeply tragic love story, which makes it the perfect offering for this month’s Girls’ Night Out.

The 1950 film noir is one of only 13 films ever to be nominated for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Director. Glenn Close starred in its revival on Broadway last year.

In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded, silent-screen goddess, Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, lives in a fantasy world. Impoverished screen writer, Joe Gillis (William Holden), on the run from debt collectors, stumbles into her reclusive world. Persuaded to work on Norma’s ‘masterpiece’, a film script that she believes will put her back in front of the cameras, he is seduced by her and her luxurious life-style. Joe becomes entrapped in a claustrophobic world until his love for another woman leads him to try and break free with, of course, dramatic consequences.
