The Georgia Historical Society (GHS) is the premier independent statewide educational and research institution responsible for collecting, examining, and teaching Georgia and American history. Founded in 1839, the Georgia Historical Society is the oldest continuously operating historical society in the South and one of the most prestigious in the nation.

They make the past relevant to the present. Through award-winning public programs, publications, teacher training, and research services. The Georgia Historical Society uses the power of our shared history to offer all Americans new and deeper perspectives on the past and present.

Located in Savannah’s Historic District, the GHS Research Center is home to more than 5 million manuscripts, photographs, architectural drawings, rare books, maps, portraits, and artifacts. Each year, researchers from around the globe, including scholars, journalists, filmmakers, genealogists, students, and teachers, use the Research Center to deepen their understanding of the past and present.

The GHS Research Center is open to the public, whether to take in historic Hodgson Hall’s architectural beauty or to dive into a research project. The Research Center also houses an exhibit on Georgia history, past to present, and rotating displays of historic documents and artifacts.

In addition to its Research Center, publications, and educational initiatives, GHS hosts a variety of public events throughout the year. The annual Georgia History Festival, GHS’s signature K-12 educational program, brings history to life for students of all ages. Events include engaging public lectures, the Colonial Faire & Muster at Wormsloe Historic Site, and the ever-popular Super Museum Sunday.

The Georgia Historical Society has also administered Georgia’s historical marker program since 1998, erecting nearly 300 new historical markers across the state on a wide variety of subjects. These roadside markers can be found throughout Savannah and across Georgia, sharing the stories of our past in an easily identifiable and understandable format.
