Tucked away on the west end of Liberty Street, The Distillery is located in an impressive brick building dating back to the early 20th century. In fact, this building was originally built as The Kentucky Distilling Company in 1904, so it is safe to say that this building was constructed for drinking. By 1920, Prohibition hit Savannah and the Louisville Distilling Company became Freich’s Pharmacy. While local legend suggests that bathtub gin and homemade beer were produced on the second floor during this time period, the building was better known as a drug store, soda fountain and lunch counter until 1940.
68 years after Freich’s Pharmacy closed, the Volen family from Maryland decided to breathe new life into the brick beauty on West Liberty Street. Using a photo of an 1895 saloon as inspiration, the Volens turned this neglected Savannah spot into the true treasure that it is today. The Volens added handcrafted mahogany bars, an oak back bar and an antique copper still – making The Distillery the only craft beer bar located in historic downtown Savannah.
Today, The Distillery makes its ancestors proud by serving up Savannah’s most impressive beer selection. Throughout The Distillery, you will find stickers, signs and T-shirts emblazoned with the words, “No crap.
