Hidden beneath Savannah's historic architecture, cobblestone streets and Southern hospitality lies a secret world of speakeasies. These clandestine bars, reminiscent of the Prohibition era, offer an intimate and exclusive atmosphere that takes patrons back in time.

From dimly lit spots hidden behind discreet doors to upscale hideaways with gorgeous city views, we've got the inside scoop on all of the underground hot spots.

Congress Street Up

Conveniently located just above the Savannah American Prohibition Museum, Congress Street Up offers a literal and metaphorical elevation of the speakeasy experience. This unique hideaway has been designed to replicate an authentic 1920s speakeasy, complete with a tin punch ceiling, parquet floors, period music and dapperly dressed bartenders. Adding to that authenticity, all of their spirits can trace their origin back to Prohibition, so you can enjoy a side of history with your craft cocktail.

La Aparicion at Mint to Be Mojito

Mint to be Mojito is a popular spot in Savannah for great drinks and bites, but step inside the restaurant’s “secret bathroom,” and you’ll be transported to an exclusive lounge with a Latin American flair. La Aparicion's chic atmosphere, flavorful cocktails and moody lighting blend for a refreshing twist on the traditional speakeasy.

Alley Cat Lounge

As its name suggests, Alley Cat Lounge is discreetly tucked away in an alley, providing an intimate and cozy escape from the city’s lively streets. Just off of the bustling Broughton Street, you’ll walk down a flight of stairs into this 1870s basement bar that boasts Savannah’s largest library collection of fine spirits and cocktails. In fact, the cocktail menu is so large, it fills up an entire newspaper.

Mata Hari's Speakeasy

Taking a cue from the infamous World War I spy of the same name, Mata Hari’s Speakeasy combines the allure of espionage with the ambiance of a 1920s speakeasy. Tucked away on Savannah’s historic Factor’s Walk, the entrance mimics a secret passage – complete with the requirement of a special key to be granted entrance (tip: ask a knowledgeable hotel concierge for help obtaining a key). The dimly lit interior and curated signature drink menu make the perfect backdrop for listening to live jazz music or catching a burlesque show.

Artillery Bar

Located in a beautifully restored landmark, Artillery Bar seamlessly integrates the city’s rich history with the art of mixology. The bar’s name pays homage to the artillery that once occupied the space, and the décor reflects its military history. Patrons can savor expertly crafted cocktails while surrounded by echoes of the city’s past.

Peacock Lounge

The Peacock Lounge exudes glamour, sophistication and elegance. With its opulent decor and attention to detail, this hidden establishment transports patrons to a world of luxury. The carefully crafted cocktail menu and live entertainment add to the overall allure, making it a must-visit for those seeking an extravagant speakeasy experience.

The Wayward

The Wayward stands out among Savannah's speakeasies by breaking away from tradition. Embracing a vibe of punk, glam, garage and rock-and-roll, this offbeat bar offers a diverse range of cocktails and a rotating menu of experimental drinks. Located inside the Perry Lane Hotel, The Wayward challenges the conventional speakeasy mold while maintaining an air of exclusivity.

208 Wine Bar

For wine enthusiasts seeking a hidden retreat, 208 Wine Bar offers a speakeasy experience centered around a carefully curated wine list. Located in a beautiful historic building on Bay Street, overlooking the Savanah River, this intimate bar provides a serene ambiance for patrons to explore a diverse selection of wines in a cozy setting.

Bar Bubbly

Sneak through a secret door disguised as a bookshelf to indulge yourself in effervescent elegance at Bar Bubbly. Specializing in champagne-based cocktails, this speakeasy radiates a sense of celebration and sophistication. The intimate setting, combined with a menu bursting with bubbly concoctions, provides a unique twist on the traditional speakeasy experience.

Twin Spades Cocktail Bar

Nestled inside The Bluff Hotel, Twin Spades Cocktail Bar offers double the delight with innovative cocktails and a captivating atmosphere. The lounge's speakeasy-inspired atmosphere invites patrons to experience the art of mixology with creative handcrafted cocktails and a curated craft beer selection that seamlessly combines tradition with contemporary flair.

Savannah's speakeasies offer more than just a hidden drinking experience; they are portals to the past, where the charm of the Roaring Twenties comes to life. The next time you find yourself strolling through the historic streets of Savannah, be sure to seek out these clandestine establishments for an unforgettable journey back in time.
